The Cliffs Boardwalk, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane

Lyle and I love to walk whenever we can, especially when we are away.

A standard walk for us is about 6km – we are normally ready for food or coffee or both by then.  The Cliffs Boardwalk at Kangaroo Point fits our needs perfectly.

We set off with our active wear on – we are being active after all.  The path is nice and wide and very clear on where walkers should walk and bikes should ride.  There are a couple of places that you share the path with the bike riders, but you soon learn to jump to the side when you hear the tinkle of a bike’s bell.

The cliffs at Kangaroo Point are spectacular, and it is lovely to walk along the base of them. Today they were spotted with people (mostly kids) climbing up the cliff face.  We stand and watch for a while and declare that it’s not for us (although I did try it several years ago and didn’t climb very high).

The view of the city on the opposite side of the river is equally impressive.  There is something about Brisbane city skyline that is quite beautiful.  I know, tall buildings made of steel and glass, big deal – but I really like it.

In between these two show ponies is the iconic Brisbane River.  Yes, it is brown, but it’s not “polluted”.  The brown water is a mix of sand and mud and the fact that the river is tidal – apparently.

A happy shag on a rock.

It is easy not to dwell on the murky water, because gliding and bobbing along on the river are numerous ferries, majestic city cats as well as a plethora of other water craft and even a shag on a rock.  I love the big show boats that you can easily see moored at Eagle Street Pier.

Lyle and I wander along the path all the way to South Bank – which is looking particularly perky as it is decorated for Budda’s birthday.  We enjoy our first coffee of the day here while watching the world walk, run, ride and float by.  More boats to watch, more buildings to be impressed by and then we turn around and stroll back to our hotel.  We grab another coffee and some delicious breakfast at the Story Bridge Deli when we arrive back.

Southbank is looking festive at this time of year.

Such a great way to start a spectacular Autumn day in Brisbane.
