Korcula, Croatia. Visit the stunning and laid-back island of Korcula in Croatia.
Imagine a place where medieval charm meets stunning Adriatic views, where you can spend your days wandering stone streets, indulging in fresh seafood, and sipping local wines at family-run vineyards. Welcome to Korčula, Croatia’s hidden gem. This island offers just the right mix of history, culture, and relaxation, perfect for travelers like us who appreciate a good meal, a glass of wine, and a slower pace. Whether you're intrigued by its ancient walls or eager to explore the surrounding islands, Korčula promises an unforgettable experience without the crowds.
To reach Korčula from Split, you can take a ferry or catamaran, which offers a scenic trip across the Dalmatian coast, taking around 2-3 hours. From Dubrovnik, a similar journey by ferry takes about 2 hours, making Korčula easily accessible from Croatia’s most famous coastal cities.
Korčula’s Old Town is a captivating blend of history and architecture, often referred to as a mini-Dubrovnik due to its fortified walls and medieval layout. Positioned on a small peninsula, the town's strategic location made it an important maritime center in the Adriatic Sea. Walking through its narrow, cobbled streets, you'll find beautiful Gothic and Renaissance buildings, including the Cathedral of St. Mark, which dates back to the 15th century.
Beyond the charm of Korčula Old Town, the island boasts several other delightful towns like Vela Luka, known for its laid-back atmosphere and rich cultural heritage, and Lumbarda, which is famous for its sandy beaches and vineyards. Lumbarda is also home to the Grk grape, a rare local variety that produces some of the island’s best wines.
The nearby islands of Vrnik, Mljet and Lastovo are perfect for island-hopping adventures, offering more opportunities to immerse yourself in natural beauty.
If you're a wine enthusiast, be sure to visit some of Korčula’s renowned vineyards, such as Bire Winery in Lumbarda and Toreta Winery in Smokvica, where you can taste the island’s distinctive Grk and Pošip wines, celebrated for their full-bodied flavor and centuries-old tradition.
We did a fabulous wine tour around the island. We went in a very comfortable small bus. The driver gave us some very interesting information and also took us to some of the most stunning vantage points for the best views of Korcula. We visited three very unique wineries and thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend this tour. Click the button below for the wine and island tour that we did.
Korčula was a very relaxing and pretty island on our Croatian trip. We loved how chilled the vibe was and how easy it was to hop from one island to the other. If you love nature, great food and wine, history and want to chill on a beach without all the tourists, then Korčula is the best choice for you.
