We spent six weeks travelling around Croatia. Here we share our favourite places to visit and what to do while you are there. Croatia is full of fascinating history, stunning natural landscapes, clear blue water and delicious wine and is definitely worth visiting. It is a unique country that will capture your heart and make you want to return again and again.

Rovinj.

Make sure you visit Rovinj on the Istrian Peninsular in Croatia. Take a day trip to the mountain towns of Groznjan and Motovun and sample the local wines and truffles. Spend time exploring the maze of cobblestone streets filled with artisan shops and galleries - and make sure you see the sunset at least once.

Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and is definitely worth visiting. It is full of parks, gardens plus many historic buildings. Take a walking tour that includes visiting the upper and lower towns as well as seeing the canon fire at 12pm every day. The tram and buses are easy to use and navigate, so take your time and visit some the outlying parks, and tourist sites. If you have time we would highly recommend doing a wine tour from Zagreb, as the surrounding countryside is stunning and the wine delicious.

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction for good reason. It is one of the most spectacular natural wonders you will ever see. We highly recommend staying for a couple of nights, so you can enter the park as early as possible in the morning and beat the crowds. Take your time to see as much of the park as time allows. We entered through gate 1 and did track C which covers the lower and upper lakes.

Split

Split is full of history, is surrounded by stunning water and is the gateway to visiting many of the islands of Croatia. Make sure to take a guided walking tour around Diocletian’s Palace. Another must do is a speed boat tour to the Blue Lagoon. One of our favourite things to do while we were in Split was a wine tour to Kovac Wines. We were able to taste wine that had been grown on the same vines for 1,000’s of years as well as local meats and cheeses.

Dubrovnik

What else can you say about Dubrovnik - but Wow! There is no place in the world like it. Make sure you do the city walls walk early for the best experience. We also recommend doing a history walking tour so you can appreciate the old city as you wander around. You will find many Game of Thrones filming locations around the old town as well as lots of cobblestone streets to get lost in. You will be forever in love the city of Dubrovnik.

Travelling to Croatia was a once in a lifetime experience for us. We loved our 6 weeks in this fascinating country.
